I worked on Technology/R&D/SMART grants for a while whilst working at an RDA. Then the application was appraised in house as well as externally by industry sector specialists. Whilst grants for engineering and tangible type products were successful I can’t recall a software based idea being funded – all being deemed to be insufficiently innovative on the basis that the idea was too similar to something else, or not a major step change, or the appraisers just couldn’t grasp exactly what was ‘new’.

I think the moral of you tale should be if you can pick it up, do some thing with it you’ll meet with more success than with an algorithm and some clever code.

On another note – beware of professional ‘innovaters’ who work in sheds……….they always think they’ve had a Eureka moment but don’t live in the real world!!
